The 2023 Triton GSR and 4 Extra Benefits of the Mitsubishi Triton

15 November 2022

Mitsubishi's line of Triton utes has been a kiwi favourite for many years. The compact UTE made its debut in Japan all the way back in 1978 and was known as the Mitsubishi Forte. Mitsubishi has used the past 44 years to refine and develop its Triton lineup into the incredible offering they are today. Equal parts practical, powerful and comfortable, it is a testament to Mitsubishi's ability to pack incredible features into this line-up, especially at the Triton's price point.

While the Triton is often perceived as the underdog in its class, there's no doubt that it punches well above its weight class! Mitsubishi isn’t afraid to push the boundaries with the Triton, boldly leading the market with its safety features and standing its ground when compared to its competitors.

There's no doubt that the Triton holds its own in its competitive field when it comes to performance, and the 2023 line-up sees the inclusion of the all-new Triton DC WS 2.4D GSR 4WD.

Introducing the 2023 Triton DC WS 2.4D GSR 4WD

The Triton DC WS 2.4D GSR 4WD is the latest addition to the Triton line-up and is the perfect choice for anyone that's looking for a workhorse with all the power to get the job done! It features all the standard key features Triton fans are after, including a 2.4L MIVEC intercooled turbo diesel engine and 6-speed automatic transmission with sports mode.

In addition to the standard key features, The Triton DC WS 2.4D GSR 4WD also includes all the aesthetic and performance found in the Triton 4WD GLX-R, able to take advantage of Mitsubishi's superb Super Select II 4WD system with off-road mode and hill descent control. The interior and exterior see an upgrade too, with 18-inch alloy wheels, high-grade sports cloth seats and carpeted floors.

As well as this, the Triton GSR 4WD benefits from Mitsubishi's industry-leading safety features found in the GLX-R, easily earning it a 5-star ANCAP safety rating. These intelligent safety features include:

  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Blind spot warning (with LCA)
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Auto high beam
  • Ultrasonic miss-acceleration mitigation system

But the new Triton GSR 4WD has a few more aces up its sleeve that set it apart from the GLX-R variant. This includes a keyless operation system (KOS) with FOB and Multi Around View Monitor to improve the convenience of the Triton further, whether at work or at play. And because you know Mitsubishi has an eye for blending bold style and practicality, you already know that the GSR is wrapped in a slew of exterior features that let everyone know that this Triton means business. This includes:

  • Black Dynamic shield
  • Black Door handles
  • Black Tailgate handle & garnish
  • Black Integrated Flat Alloy Side steps
  • LED headlamp with black surround
  • Black 18” alloy wheels
  • Black Rear step bumper
  • Black Door heated mirrors
  • LED headlamp with black surround
  • GSR badge on tailgate

There's no doubt that Mitsubishi has another knockout on their hands with the latest inclusion in their Triton line-up, the 2023 Triton GSR 4WD.

The Triton GSR 4WD also boasts a 3.5 tonne braked towing capacity and with that kiwi summer just around the corner, the GSR is the perfect vehicle to tow a good-sized boat on those mint Kiwi summer days!

But while we can compare the performance and features of these brilliant vehicles all day, one major area the Triton truly shines is in its practicality - and sometimes these numbers don't fully translate to a set of bullet points. At the end of the day, it's good to know how these features benefit your lifestyle. Sure, knowing Triton's horse and towing power certainly help cement it as a great contender in its class of UTE, but sometimes it's useful to know some of the benefits of features that you will engage with every day. And while the Triton holds its ground in performance, these additional features make it the perfect companion to almost any lifestyle.

1. A Seamless User Experience From Start to Finish

While we often associate the term "user experience" with technology and cars, the relationship between these two sectors has strengthened exponentially as time has passed. We are at the point where it is no longer feasible to separate the two. Technology is used to enhance the experience of your vehicle, providing a level of control, comfort and convenience that once would have been considered a work of science fiction. One of Triton's strong points is its implementation of technology to limit as many frustrations as possible so that you can focus on what needs to be done in your day. It all starts with the keyless entry and ignition. Merely removing the need to fumble for your keys on a stressful day pays dividends when this task can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. It may sound hyperbolic, but it is a situation we can all relate to.

Pair this with Triton’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, and the transition from walking to your car and being on the road is seamless. Apple CarPlay or Android Auto handling your navigation, music, phone calls and text messages makes it so easy to stay on the go without missing a beat. Voice and controls on the steering wheel allow you to stay focused and get on with your day without any frustrations.

2. Good Company Should Be Kept Comfortable

When looking to purchase a UTE, it's very easy to get lost in the details of what's under the hood. However, realistically, this isn't where you're going to be spending most of your time. While it's super important that your vehicle has the power and performance to take care of all your lifestyle needs, if it does this while your passengers are in perpetual discomfort it's still going to be a miserable experience. Luckily, the Triton seamlessly blends style performance and comfort to ensure that you and your passengers will always enjoy the ride.

The curve at the back of the cab gives the back seat a pitch that makes the seats extremely comfortable, especially when compared to Triton’s competitors with straight-lined back seats that can lead to back pain on those longer journeys. We all know that in many UTEs, the passenger seats seem to be more of an afterthought than a feature. It's like the company is just ticking a box, but Mitsubishi has clearly decided that passengers in the Triton deserve far more than that! The Triton takes your company into consideration, and this is evident through a range of quality-of-life features designed specifically to keep them comfortable.  For instance, the slot-style air ventilation as opposed to the centre console vents of the Triton’s competitors provides a superior level of climate control within your vehicle, while also providing passengers with the ability to control their own fans to their liking. These considerations for both driver and passenger extend to many different features including the fact that the Triton offers multiple USB ports and 12-volt accessory sockets, accessible even for rear-seat passengers.

3. A Workhorse Built for Everyday Practicality

There has been a major shift in the market over the past decade. While UTEs were originally thought of as work vehicles, many people (especially Kiwis) are switching out their sedans for the versatility of SUVs and UTEs. We've always been an adventurous nation and with such an incredible landscape and seascape to explore, it's easy to understand why this trend has emerged. With this in mind, the Triton GSR ticks all the boxes for work, play and everyday life. A dual cab 4WD that provides single-digit fuel efficiency means that it has the capabilities of playing the role of the work vehicle and daily driver. Multiple features have been put in place with family in mind, ensuring that the Triton is equipped with everything you need to keep the whanau happy. For instance, it has been stated that the Triton’s ISO FIX zip-enclosed anchors make it the easiest ute for installing child safety seats. The large tray holds 30 shopping bags, whereas the Nissan Navara and Toyota Hilux can only hold 24 and 29 respectively. But what about those tight shopping centre car parks? Triton has you covered by having the tightest turning circle on the market - coming in at 11.8m. This makes it perfect for navigating narrow Auckland streets, and yards, and getting into spaces in tight supermarket car parks.

Tradies and families alike often prefer the fact that the Triton is not as tall as some of its competitors. With roof racks added, the cargo is much easier to access, whether to load, unload or adjust. As with the other features covered in this blog, removing these little frustrations can really add up to an incredible experience.

4. Easy to Drive and Maintain. Even Easier on the Wallet

One of those little frustrations that often catch diesel vehicle owners out is the need to add Blue to their diesel tank. Well add another item to the list of Triton's conveniences list - it doesn't require it. Not only is this one less thing you have to think about, but it also makes the Triton cheaper to run. On top of this, the 4WD GLX-R, GSR and GLS Black Edition models' Super Select 4WD system can drive on 4WD High on the tarmac 24/7 without any issues. This is great for people that want to take advantage of the Triton’s towing power if they own a boat or caravan. This doesn't affect your manufacturer's warranty, which is incredible considering Mitsubishi has the most extensive warranty on the market - The Mitsubishi Diamond Advantage. Super Select also has four drive modes instead of three. It shares 2WD High, 4WD High and 4WD High with central differential lock with Easy Select, but additionally features 4WD Low with centre differential lock. This gives the ute a real low-down crawling ability. It truly is astounding, and it simply adds to Mitsubishi's reputation for offering some of the best 4WD systems in the world.
