Buying a Mitsubishi Triton in 2023

14 December 2022

There's no doubt about it - Kiwis love their UTEs. Whilst once relegated to worksites and rural areas, the UTE has become more and more popular with a broad range of New Zealanders. Sure, they are still the workhorses of the farming and construction industry, but many New Zealanders have found value in the versatility of these utility vehicles as everyday runners and to take the whanau on an adventure.

This being said, UTE ownership has seen a major shakeup in the last two years. UTE owners faced a two-prong attack. Firstly an unprecedented global pandemic brought supply chains to a grinding halt, making it incredibly difficult to get your hands on the latest models. While this may have been difficult by itself, the icing on the cake was the government's implementation of new taxes and emission regulations on these vehicles.

Kiwis scrambled to secure their favourite UTEs, and now that the dust has settled a bit in 2023, we can reflect on the effects this has had on the market, and what the future has to install for New Zealand's love of UTEs.

Looking Back at Mitsubishi Triton Range Reception

The Mitsubishi Triton range has been a popular choice among New Zealanders, and this decisive period in NZ’s UTE history saw the release of the 2021 Mitsubishi Triton. The 2021 Mitsubishi Triton broke into the New Zealand market with full force, providing UTE lovers with one of the most solid Mitsubishi 4WD vehicles yet. Living up to its “work hard, play harder” tagline, the 2021 Mitsubishi Triton was adopted by New Zealanders quickly. Its versatility between a daily runner and an absolute workhorse that was easy both on the eyes and wallet earned its spot in garages and worksites across the country.

It quickly claimed its spot as the third best-selling UTE in New Zealand. Even with all the factors working against them, Mitsubishi had a winner on their hands with the 2021 Mitsubishi Triton.

Introducing the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton GSR

Building on the widespread success of the 2021 Mitsubishi Triton, Mitsubishi has released a brand new addition to the lineup -The Triton Double Cab Wellside 2.4D GSR 4WD. The GSR sits towards the more premium side of the Triton line-up while still boasting a competitive price, stacked with all the standard key features Triton fans are after as well as a 2.4L MIVEC intercooled turbo diesel engine and 6-speed automatic transmission with sports mode to make easy work of any job you throw in front of it.

But while the Triton GSR includes all the standard features of the Triton range, the variant goes the extra mile by including all the aesthetic additions and performance found in the Triton 4WD GLX-R. This grants you access to Mitsubishi's superb Super Select II 4WD system with off-road mode and hill descent control. All this while boasting an upgrade to the interior with high-grade sports cloth seats and carpeted floors.

On top of this, the GSR brings a few more exclusive features to the table that sets it apart from the GLX-R, including a keyless operation system (KOS) with FOB and Multi Around View Monitor. The GSR includes an array of driver conveniences whether you're at work or play.

Couple this with the GSR's upgraded 18" alloy wheels and 3.5 tonnes braked towing capacity, and putting a UTE to work has never looked so good.

The UTE Tax and Its Effect on Buying a Triton in 2023

Since the initial release of the 2021 Mitsubishi Triton, there have been some major changes in the industry. Thankfully, supply chains have somewhat settled and customers have better access to these sought-after UTEs.

However, since the initial 2021 Triton release, the additional 2023 GSR has only become available after the New Zealand government's implementation of the emissions penalty in relation to the Clean Car Scheme.

So what exactly is the penalty, and how does it affect buying a ute in 2023? New Zealand’s government has put in place a clean car discount package in an attempt to lower the country's CO2 emissions rates. The government's push for electric, hybrid, and low-emission vehicles comes at the cost of a penalty of up to $4,082.50 when purchasing a new Mitsubishi Triton ($3795 for a Triton 2WD and $4,082.50 for a Triton 4WD- including the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton GSR). The rules relate to the first New Zealand registration of a vehicle and are applied to both new and secondhand vehicles.

This rule was put in place in January 2022, and the penalty is expected to increase in 2023.
