Since its launch in 1982 the Pajero has sold more than 3.3 million vehicles worldwide across four generations. The fifth generation is a substantial departure from the model it replaces. It moves to a ladder frame chassis, and it is built in Thailand alongside the Triton, with a body and interior of its own.
The Pajero uses a heavily modified version of the Triton ladder frame, with thicker side members and additional cross bracing. The front and rear of the chassis have been developed exclusively for the Pajero.

At launch the Pajero is offered with a 2.4 litre turbo diesel four cylinder producing 150kW and 480Nm of torque, paired with a new generation eight speed automatic transmission. It is rated to tow up to 3.5 tonnes across the range.
The cabin is a clean sheet design. The tall dashboard takes its layout from the first generation Pajero, finished in soft touch materials with a stitching technique inspired by the traditional Japanese craft Kimekomi.
